Chongqing - In the drive to eradicate poverty by the end of 2020, Chongqing Municipality has unyieldingly adhered to the national guiding concept that lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets. This principle has played a central role in rural revitalization, which has driven ecological restoration while bringing prosperity to formerly impoverished communities through green agriculture and tourism.

In this episode, iChongqing reporter James Alexander reflects on a year of multiple explorations into formerly impoverished counties in Chongqing, where the principle of environmental protection has driven prosperity through green agriculture and rural tourism.

Key measures have included the dismantling of old factories and chemical plants to be replaced by attractive landscapes. Shanty buildings have either been renovated or torn down to offer safe and attractive housing that compliments the local environment. Sanitation facilities have been installed throughout towns and villages to protect the land and waterways, and ecologically destructive practices such as unregulated fishing and hunting have been stopped to restore the abundance of wildlife.

Government institutions and private investors have joined hands with rural people to establish cooperatives that offer dependable employment, shares, and dividends to locals who contribute their energy and land to the projects. They also receive assistance with registering brand names, obtaining quality assurance certification, and training with e-commerce to promote and ship their products to all corners of the country in real-time.

Polluting industries have made way for beautiful landscapes as part of ecological restoration projects across Chongqing Municipality.

Home-stays, guesthouses, and country entertainment are another feature of rural revitalization. These attractions offer all modern conveniences with traditional rustic appeal. Tourists from neighboring regions can travel easily to these destinations across the municipality thanks to a high-standard road network.

Formerly isolated counties are also being swiftly integrated into national and regional high-speed rail and airport networks so that in the future, ever more visitors from far and wide can visit formerly inaccessible locations to enjoy the fantastic scenery, green produce, and rural hospitality, which will only serve to bring ever greater prosperity in turn.

As he pulled into the driveway of number four, the first thing he saw

"Shoo!" said Mr. Dursley loudly. The cat didn't move. It just gave him

to pull himself together, he let himself into the house. He was still

determined not to mention anything to his wife.

Mrs. Dursley had had a nice, normal day. She told him over dinner all

There was a tabby cat standing on the corner of Privet Drive, but there

wasn't a map in sight. What could he have been thinking of? It must have

been a trick of the light.

Mr. Dursley blinked and stared at the cat. It stared back. As Mr.

Dursley drove around the corner and up the road, he watched the cat in

his mirror. It was now reading the sign that said Privet Drive -- no, looking

at the sign; cats couldn't read maps or signs. Mr. Dursley gave himself a

little shake and put the cat out of his mind. As he drove toward town he

thought of nothing except a large order of drills he was hoping to get that

day.

But on the edge of town, drills were driven out of his mind by

something else. As he sat in the usual morning traffic jam, he couldn't help

noticing that there seemed to be a lot of strangely dressed people about.

People in cloaks. Mr. Dursley couldn't bear people who dressed in funny

clothes -- the getups you saw on young people! He supposed this was

some stupid new fashion. He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel

and his eyes fell on a huddle of these weirdos standing quite close by.

They were whispering excitedly together. Mr. Dursley was enraged to

see that a couple of them weren't young at all; why, that man had to be

older than he was, and wearing an emerald-green cloak! The nerve of him!

But then it struck Mr. Dursley that this was probably some silly stunt --

these people were obviously collecting for something... yes, that would be

it. The traffic moved on and a few minutes later, Mr. Dursley arrived in the

Grunnings parking lot, his mind back on drills.

When it comes to showering, most people do it either first thing in the morning or night before bed.

Advice on the proper time to bathe has varied with some experts saying a shower at night leads to better sleep, while others swear by a morning rinse to kick-start their day.

Daily Mail Online scrolled the annals of shower studies and spoke to New York-based dermatologists to settle the score.

We found that while both have their pros and cons, a shower at night washes off the sweat, oils and allergens of the day, giving you better shut-eye and radiant skin.

You’ll wash off the grime of the day

New York-based dermatologist Dr Samer Jaber told Daily Mail Online that a nighttime shower is good to wash off the dirt of the day.

If you’re out all day and sweaty or working out you should definitely shower before going to bed,’ he said.

He added that by the end of the day your body is covered in all kinds of allergens including pollen which can irritate your skin.

In the spring you might be covered in allergens like pollen if you’ve been outside, so you would want to get that off your skin before going to sleep,’ Dr Jaber said.

But he said that regardless of a shower, the most important thing to do is wash your face at night before laying on your pillow to prevent oils from building up and causing acne.

  Nighttime showers help you sleep

Showers regulate your body temperature which can help you get better sleep.

Several studies have shown that taking a shower in the evening and at least 90 minutes before sleep will allow your body to heat up and cool down in time for adequate shut-eye.

Research adds that showers work as a stress reliever because they reduce cortisol levels.

Cortisol is a steroid hormone made by your adrenal glands that helps your body respond to stress, regulate blood sugar and fight infections.

Sleep expert Dr Janet Kennedy told The New York Times: ’The body naturally cools down as bedtime approaches, in sync with the circadian rhythm.’

Showering artificially raises the temperature again and allows for a faster cool down, which seems to hasten sleep,’ she added.

Showering is also a good way to unwind and release muscle tension which can aid in sleep.

You’ll have better skin with a shower at night

Your skin regenerates at night, not only on your face but on your entire body.

That means while you sleep you are shedding dead skin cells and building new ones.

This is why Dr Jaber stresses the importance of washing at least your face before going to sleep in order to take off all the grime, make up or pollutants that clog pores.

A full-body shower at night will make it much easier for your skin to get rid of the dead skin cells, which will you radiant come morning time.

  Morning showers boost creativity

Dr Jaber said: ’I personally shower in the morning because it wakes me up, but it’s really up to everyone’s individual preference.’

A study from Harvard found that morning showers can help those who are feeling stressed due to work or under pressure to be creative.

The same way a shower reduces cortisol levels to help you relax at night, releasing that same hormone in the morning can lower stress, opening up the way for creativity, according to research.

If you shave in the morning - shower first

Dr Jaber said that for men who shave, a morning shower may be better.

It might be better for men to shower first thing in the morning before shaving because the warm water can decrease ingrown hairs,’ he said.

Warm water will soften the skin and open up the pores to prevent ingrowns.

The same will work for women who shave.

Dr Derek V Chan, a New York-based cosmetic and medical dermatologist, advised patients shower once a day.

While hot showers feel great, Dr Chan urged people to opt for warm showers as they’re better for the skin.

Hot showers may feel good, but in general, warm showers are better than hot showers,’ he told Daily Mail Online.

Using very hot water can reduce moisture in the skin and strip away many of the skin’s natural lubricants,’ he said

Dr Jaber said that as long as you shower for just a few minutes, no more than 10, twice a day is no problem.

Based on expert opinion and research, showering at night may be the best way to unwind after a long day and rejuvenate your skin.

However, if you’re not a morning person a blast of water from the shower can get you ready for the day.

If you can’t decide, showering in the morning and night is harmless as long as you don’t dwell under hot water for too long.

Dr Jaber said: ’Whatever makes you feel better, that’s what you should do.’

  1. Mix gelatin with essential oil

One thing we might’ve missed about gelatin is that it is a super-rich source of protein. It provides almost 2 grams of protein per ½ cup, which is a lot. Thus, it’s the best ingredient for a hair mask to thicken and strengthen thin and damaged hair. Blend water, unflavored gelatin, and a few drops of essential oil, then apply the mixture on your hair and massage. Wait a few minutes and rinse with cool water.

  2. Create hair mask with eggs and Greek yogurt.

Eggs are rich in protein, biotin, and vitamin B12 which are all essential to strengthen thin andoily hair. The idea of washing your hair with egg might sound unpleasantat first, but the benefits of its compounds will amaze you even after the first use. Take some eggs and mix them with Greek yogurt, apply the mixture to your hair, and leave it on for an hour or so. You can then wash your hair, dry it with a microfiber towel, and enjoy the results.

  3. Sleep with your hair in a bun.

One of the easiest ways to give volume to your hair can take action while you are asleep. Wash your hair just before going to bed and use a scrunchie to pull your wet hair up into a high bun. This way, your hair will dry overnight and when get up the next morning, you’ll notice double the volume and waves. You can also try 2 buns for a curlier look. One thing to remember is that curls always give a natural twist and texture to your hair.

  4. Massage scalp with a lightweight oil before washing.

A study showed that massaging your scalp can help hair growth and thicken your hair. Massage helps blood circulation. Try gently massaging your scalp in a circular motion before you shampoo. Use a hair treatment oil or a few drops of coconut oil, which are extremely beneficial for frizzy and damaged hair.

  5. Include more veggies, fruits, and protein in your diet.

Having thin hair doesn’t just affect the volume of your hair, but also its breakage. If you want strong and healthy hair, you should definitely include greens and fruits in your diet. Our hair needs iron, biotin, and vitamins to grow healthy. Many vegetables, including spinach and beans, are high in iron and, of course, fruits are great sources of vitamins too.

Also, bananas, peanuts, and cauliflower contain biotin. For thick hair, protein is also necessary. Whole grains and soybeans are great sources of protein.

At some point in elementary school, your science teacher probably explained to you that there are 365 days in a year because that’s how long it takes for Earth to complete one full rotation around the sun. What they might not have specified, however, is that it’s not exactly 365 days—it’s actually closer to 365.2421 days.

So, if we want our calendar year to begin right when Earth begins a new rotation around the sun, we have to account for (roughly) an extra quarter of a day each year, or one day every four years. History.com reports that the Egyptians had already been doing this for a while before Europe finally caught on in 46 BC, when Roman dictator Julius Caesar and astronomer Sosigenes put their heads together to come up with what we now call the Julian calendar, which includes 12 months, 365 days, and an additional “leap day” every four years on February 29.

But rounding 0.2421 up to 0.25 each year created an issue, because it didn’t quite add up to a full day every four years—and that tiny discrepancy meant that after 128 years, the calendar year ended up starting a day before Earth had completed its rotation around the sun. By the 14th century, the calendar year was starting a whopping 10 days before Earth finished its orbit.

In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII sought to correct the error by suggesting that we simply skip a leap day every so often. His Gregorian calendar, which we still use today, mandates that we omit the leap day during years evenly divisible by 100 but not by 400. For instance, the year 2000 included a leap day because it’s divisible by 100 and 400; the year 2100, on the other hand, will not include a leap day, since it’s evenly divisible by 100, but not by 400.

Gregory XIII’s correction to Caesar’s overcorrection is itself a bit of an under-correction, so we’ll probably need to reevaluate our leap day protocol again in about 10,000 years.

Shaking hands seems like a gesture that has been around forever. Indeed, a throne base from the reign of ancient Assyria's Shalmaneser III in the 9th century BCE clearly shows two figures clasping hands. The Iliad, usually dated to the 8th century BCE, mentions that two characters “clasped each other's hands and pledged their faith.” Centuries later, Shakespeare wrote in As You Like It that two characters “shook hands and swore brothers.” It might seem like shaking hands is an ancient custom, the roots of which are lost to the sands of time.

  Except.

Historians who have pored over old etiquette books have noticed that handshaking in the modern sense of a greeting doesn’t appear until the mid-19th century, when it was considered a slightly improper gesture that should only be used with friends. But if Shakespeare was writing about shaking hands a few hundred years earlier, what happened?

  DEFINING THE HANDSHAKE

According to author Torbjörn Lundmark in his Tales of Hi and Bye: Greeting and Parting Rituals Around the World, the problem comes in differing definitions of the handshake. The early handshakes mentioned above were part of making deals or burying the hatchet; Shalmaneser III’s throne base references him honoring a treaty with the Babylonian king during a revolt. In the Iliad, Diomedes and Glaucus shook hands when they realized they were “guest-friends,” and Diomedes proclaimed “Let’s not try to kill each other.” Shakespeare was similarly referencing settlement of a conflict.

  bury the hatchet: v.

The modern handshake as a form of greeting is harder to trace. Traditionally, the origins are often given to the Quakers. But as Dutch sociologist Herman Roodenburg—the chief authority for the history of handshaking—wrote in a chapter of an anthology called A Cultural History of Gesture, “More than in any other field, that of the study of gesture is one in which the historian has to make the most of only a few clues”.

One of the earliest clues he cites is a 16th-century German translation of the French writer Rabelais’s Gargantua and Pantagruel. When one character meets Gargantua, Rabelais writes (in one modern English translation), “he was greeted with a thousand caresses, a thousand embraces, a thousand good-days.” But according to Roodenburg, the 16th-century German translation adds references to shaking hands.

There's additional evidence for a handshaking tradition in that era: In 1607 the author James Cleland (believed to have been a Scotsman living in England) proclaimed that instead of things like bowing down to everyone’s shoes and kissing hands, he’d rather “retaine our good olde Scottish shaking of the two right hands together at meeting with an vncouered head".

  HANDSHAKING—BACK TO THE FUTURE

A popular hypothesis suggests that Cleland’s statements against bowing were actually a wish to go back to a potentially very traditional (though poorly recorded) method of greeting in Europe. As the centuries progressed, handshaking was replaced by more ‘hierarchical’ ways of greeting—like bowing. According to Roodenburg, handshaking survived in a few niches, like in Dutch towns where they’d use the gesture to reconcile after disagreements. Around the same time, the Quakers—who valued equality—also made use of the handshake. Then, as the hierarchies of the continent weakened, the handshake re-emerged as a standard greeting among equals—the way it remains today.

Not everyone fell in love with the handshake, however. According to an article from December 1884, “the usage has found its way into other nations, but so contrary is it to their instinct, that, in France, for example, a society has been recently formed to abolish ‘le shake-hands’ as a vulgar English innovation.”

As for why shaking hands was deemed a good method of greeting, rather than some other gesture, the most popular explanation is that it incapacitates the right hand, making it useless for weapon holding. In the 19th century it was argued that shaking hands without removing gloves was quite rude and required an immediate apology. One 1870 text explains that this “idea would also seem to be an occult remnant of the old notion that the glove might conceal a weapon.”

  incapacitate[ˌɪnkəˈpæsɪteɪt]: vt.

Sadly, in a world where obscure Rabelais translations provide critical evidence, the true reason may remain forever elusive.
